Abstract

To navigate  the Parana River,  between  the states of Sao Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul,  it was common  to find islands  in most of  the  route.  These were  formed by  the accumulation of  sediment eposited by water  at  certain points,  over  thousands  of  years. Nowadays,  some  small islands  in some of the  local reservoirs are  left, especially in  areas  farther  upstream,  near  the  beginning  of  the impoundment of the river. This study aimed at evaluating the changes in size occurred on the islands in the Parana River,  from 1984 to 2001 using  geoprocessing tolls. The results enabled to bserve that most of the assessed islands had variations in the size or shape.
