El comportamiento de alimentación del Ramphastos toco en frutas del Sterculia apetala fue observado en la Estancia Caiman (19°51’ 05” S - 56°16’ 10” W), Miranda - MS, en el Medio oeste de Brasil. El R. toco es un visitante frecuente de las frutas del S. apetala en busca de sus semillas nutritivas. El pájaro ingiere las semillas enteras, quita la sarcotesta que cubre las semillas y comienza a regurgitar las semillas enteras y intactas. Esta información sugiere que el R. toco sea un dispersor potencial de semillas de S. apetala, aunque investigaciones acerca de la germinación de semillas regurgitadas sean necesarias para explicar si el R. toco es un dispersor efectivo del S. apetala en el Pantanal.

Abstract

The feeding behaviour of Ramphastos toco toucan on Sterculia apetala fruits was observed in Estância Caiman (19°51’05” S – 56°16’10” W), Miranda – Mato Grosso do Sul, mid-western Brazil. During the days of 18th and 22nd of July of 2005, Ramphastos toco toucan was a frequent visitor to the fruits of Sterculia apetala, searching for the nutritive seeds of this tree. The toucan swallows the whole seeds, removes the sarcotesta which recovers the seeds and then regurgitates the entire seeds, apparently intact. This fi nding suggests that Ramphastos toco toucan is a potential seed disperser of the Sterculia apetala. However, research about the germination of the regurgitated seeds should be conducted to evaluate if Ramphastos toco is a real disperser of Sterculia apetala.
