Abstract

This article analyzes how the poetics of Marília Garcia, in Então descemos para o centro da terra, published in Expedição: nebulosa (2023), develops a reflection on the relationships between memory, temporality, and historical violence in Brazil. It examines how poetic writing transforms the memory of the Brazilian military dictatorship into a practice of listening and critical interrogation of the present, in dialogue with the works of Letícia Parente (1975) and Fernando Piola (2007–2012). The analysis demonstrates how the images of the map, the roots, and the descent to the center of the earth constitute procedures for investigating the layers of collective memory and the still-unresolved violences of Brazilian history. Marília Garcia’s poetics displaces the promise of a redemptive future toward a practice of attention, listening, and critical persistence in the face of the historical continuities of authoritarianism.
